Welcome to another episode of Rideshare Road Talk Conversations in Motion, a podcast where we create unfiltered talk space that examines the meaningful lives of my passengers while engaging in personal and topical discussions. I'm your host and driver, john Foddes, and we're cruising the streets of Washington DC. Buckle up, let's drive. How's your weekend so far?
Speaker 2:Good, today was such a sunny day. How about yours? Yeah, it was okay.
Speaker 1:Windy as heck out. Windy right Really really windy.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Speaker 1:Are you from DC?
Speaker 2:Well, no, I'm Italian, but I've been living here for a long time.
Speaker 1:Very nice. My part of my family is from Naples.
Speaker 2:Oh, that's nice.
Speaker 1:From Caserta, oh, caserta, yes of course. I have. Unfortunately, I've never been.
Speaker 2:Oh you should. It breaks my heart. No, you should. You always have time.
Speaker 1:And my father's family was from Greece.
Speaker 2:Oh, nice, nice mix.
Speaker 1:I know, and then my wife is Egyptian.
Speaker 2:Interesting.
Speaker 1:So our kids are beautiful. I love that. I love that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So how long have you been here in DC?
Speaker 2:Oh, six years and a half.
Speaker 1:Oh, wow, okay yeah it's been. And where's your family from in Italy?
Speaker 2:Well, we're from the north of Italy, so Verona, which is between kind of like Milan and Venice.
Speaker 1:Okay so like Verona, which is between Milan and Venice. Okay so, not in the mountains, but up there Almost. Yeah, Not like Cortina.
Speaker 2:Not Cortina, yeah, but closer than Naples.
Speaker 1:Let's put it this way Okay, yeah, even though I haven't been, I find it fascinating how the food changes by region.
Speaker 2:So much, so much. Up north, less reds and more um, um, not uh, traditional pasta, but gnocchi oh, yeah, okay, yeah, so many yeah more so in the north than south right, but I feel like again, like you drive two hours, you change region and the food is, I mean, not completely different, but substantially different yeah, that must be beautiful.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I tried to plan a trip uh like nine months ago. For whatever reason, it didn't work out it's okay.
Speaker 2:I mean just again, there's always, always time yeah and ithan is gonna stay the same, so this person's. I don't know where she's running oh my god, what is she doing?
Speaker 1:I don't know, but she was. What is she?
Speaker 2:doing oh my god, that's crazy, because I almost moved to that building. Oh, yeah, yeah, almost, and then I, I, and then I picked that one. But you know, that would have been funny if she was my neighbor but you know that wouldn't be funny if she was my neighbor.
Speaker 1:So you have lots of family back home yeah. Yeah, you go back often, super often.
Speaker 2:That's good, that's good, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:And what do you do here for work?
Speaker 2:I'm in consulting, I do international tax consulting oh okay, yeah, so you With numbers.
Speaker 1:You're a numbers girl? Yeah, Definitely Me. I'm not so good with numbers.
Speaker 2:Me neither to be honest, but you know I pay the bills.
Speaker 1:so Just enough to make a living right. So just enough to make a living right, just enough to make a living okay, you know. Back to the, to the italy conversation. You know the one thing I found it's like positano, amalfi, it's beautiful, right, but it's it's so crowded now, oh yeah, no, no, like, it's almost like I, I think I'd rather go like in December or November.
Speaker 2:Yeah, there's like certain times, especially like in August, July, in which it really doesn't make sense to go, because I mean it's not enjoyable so many people.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:Like it's a carnage, but at the same time, if you go in June or in September, you have a completely different experience. So yeah that's also, that's also, that's also good. But at the same time I mean italy kind of, I mean the whole european kind of like, shuts down in um august so everybody's on vacation, so prices are like really really high. Beaches are extremely crowded and I mean it's not always like a really enjoyable time.
Speaker 1:You said you had dinner plans.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's the birthday of a friend of us. Oh, that's nice yeah.
Speaker 1:Like house party or going out to eat. No, no, it's a house they have, like a really nice house in Capitol Hill and they love to host them, so yeah, where do you like going out around town?
Speaker 2:Here and there. I mean I don't go crazy out, but I mean I like to try new restaurants and I think especially lately this has been upgrading. You know, georgetown is nice for brunch yeah and I like 14th street. To a certain extent it depends also. I mean, I live in mount vernon. My vernon has like a ton too. Don't to offer to be honest.
Speaker 1:The Union Market's an interesting area.
Speaker 2:Union Market, yeah, is pretty new and they place like a ton of new things in there. They're like really trying to push it.
Speaker 1:St Anselm looks nice, and what's the other one, the Mexican place El Presidente?
Speaker 2:Yeah, they just opened one Italian, no, a French one, but it's run by Italian. Wait, it's.
Speaker 1:French, but it's run by Italians. Yeah super common. There's a joke there somewhere. Oh, I know there's a joke somewhere.
Speaker 2:I know, I know, and it's called Minetta Tavern and it's really really good.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I actually met a young lady that works upstairs. Yeah, the upstairs is nice.
Speaker 2:In the cocktail yeah, yeah, yeah, she was very sweet yeah, it's kind of like, very like new york ish a little bit but I think for dc standards it's really pretty. You know, market, I mean, they're like really pushing it like really, really hard. I mean, if you remember, how was it, like you know, a few years ago, the, it was pretty different yeah, it was.
Speaker 1:Uh. Have you spent much time in new york? A few, yeah, you know I get that area almost has like a smaller like meatpacking district kind of vibe to it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, 100%, you know it's very edgy. Yeah.
Speaker 1:And it works. It certainly works. Just hearing your accent makes me want to go to Italy. Oh, you should, I know.
Speaker 2:And plus, I have such a funky accent. I mean, I don't think I have like a proper Italian accent.
Speaker 1:No, you do, Thank you. Your voice is very deep, thank you.
Speaker 2:No, you should. Yeah, I will Quality of life in Italy is really high.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:I mean, obviously you're in the US for the bride.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I'm over it. I think I can qualify for dual citizenship with Greece and Italy, but I have all my father's paperwork.
Speaker 2:But I have nothing. Greece is such a simple life. Yeah, but good, simple life.
Speaker 1:But I have nothing for Italy. I'd have to probably go to the church and find a family name, and that would probably be very labor intensive to do that gosh. If I lived in italy, oh my god, I'd probably weigh 500 pounds um no, because I mean you, you walk a lot. Yeah, it's good, yeah, yeah. Well, I'm re-inspired to go visit now, so I appreciate it.
Speaker 2:I appreciate the conversation for sure.
Speaker 1:And air italia's got nice direct flights right from Dallas.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, no 100%, I mean especially even from DC. You can do DC Rome. From DCA yeah yeah, yeah, like DCA or like the Dallas one.
Speaker 1:Okay, okay, Thank you so so much. It was very nice meeting you I know same. Enjoy your evening.
Speaker 2:Oh boy, no, no, thank you.
Speaker 1:That's so funny. Have a good night.
Speaker 2:Ciao Ciao.
